Hakeem Rahim

Hakeem Rahim, Ed.M, M.A. had the distinct honor of being the first African- American male valedictorian in Uniondale High School’s history. Upon leaving Uniondale, NY, Hakeem attended Harvard University and went on to graduate with a BA in psychology. He then attended Teacher’s College, Columbia University and graduated with dual masters in psychological counseling. Hakeem is the President and CEO of I Am Acceptance, Inc, a 501(c)3 non-profit whose mission is to decrease stigma, promote mental health and ensure the mental wellness of all. He is also owner and CEO of Live Breathe, LLC. Through Live Breathe, LLC, Hakeem offers mental health speaking engagements and professional development workshops.

In 2012, Hakeem began speaking openly about his 18 year journey with bipolar disorder. Through his speaking and advocacy work, Hakeem has spoken to law enforcement officials, individuals with mental illness and their family members and to over 45,000 college, high school and middle school students. In March 2014, Hakeem testified on Capitol Hill in front of the Energy and Commerce Congressional Committee where he shared his experience living with bipolar disorder. In 2016, Hakeem testified in front of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee and participated in the Senate Summit on Mental Health as a speaker and panelist. He has been featured in major news outlets for his advocacy work including USA Today. In April 2016, Hakeem was featured in print and television ads as part of New York City’s ThriveNYC Mental Health Awareness Campaign.

In October 2016, Hakeem was invited by the United States Embassy of Jamaica to represent the United States through his mental health advocacy. Hakeem is a member of the Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance’s national board and is also an author and recorded spoken word artist.
